“Passing places”
SAFF 2021 Award Winner
Every summer, the small island of the Isle of Mull is transformed. Between July and August, tourists flock to the island to soak up its dramatic landscapes and wildlife, including the recently re-introduced White Tailed Eagle.
But what impact does this have on the island for locals? Passing places traverses the island's one and only main road to find out.
Director Biography
Self-shooting documentary director and anthropologist. I am currently based in London and working as a freelance editor. My current work is concerned with the complex relationship that exists between humans and nature and how we tell these stories.
Director’s Statement
Through this documentary I wanted to uncover the impact of eco-tourism on small island communities. The film is based on 6 weeks of field research I conducted on the Isle of Mull, looking at the re-introduction of White-Tailed Eagles in Scotland. The Isle of Mull has become known as ‘Eagle Island’, with tourists flocking there each summer to catch a sighting of the impressive birds.
Based on the conversations I had there, Passing Places depicts a slice of life on the Isle of Mull in the summer period. Through the perspective of a local bus tour driver, it portrays the central theme on local’s minds- the daily traffic endured by the islanders on the island’s one and only main road.
