“Harm”

SAFF 2018 Award Winner

Sean has been arrested; for what exactly is unclear. As events from earlier in the night are revealed, Sean is clearly not himself and at odds with girlfriends Joanne. When questioned by Police, he remains silent, unwilling to communicate any sort of defense. Whether it is guilt or something else is unclear. As the police investigation probes further, he becomes more scared of the truth being revealed. What has Sean done? Perhaps mostly importantly, what has been done to him?

Director’s Statement

I wanted to make a film that put the audience in quite a difficult morale dilemma as there are no clear 'good characters' and every couple we see, the dynamic of their relationship shows different degrees of strain and tension, with our main couple's lives, Sean and Joanne, dominated by violence and sexual manipulation. By the end of the film we feel sympathy to our main character but his actions are not too far from the violence that he is a victim of. Many films in Scotland deal with drugs and violence in less affluent communities, I wanted 'HARM' to be about diverse, attractive, middle class people and the impact their actions have on themselves, friends and neighbours.
